What BMI measures

BMI is weight divided by height squared (kg/m²). It is a quick population-level screen: under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–24.9 healthy, 25–29.9 overweight, and 30+ obese.

Its limitations

BMI does not distinguish muscle from fat or account for where fat is stored, so very muscular people can score “overweight” while looking lean. Treat it as one rough indicator alongside waist measurement, body-fat percentage, and how you feel — not a diagnosis.

Frequently asked questions

Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. Muscle is denser than fat, so muscular individuals may register as overweight despite low body fat. Consider body-fat percentage instead.
What is a healthy BMI?
A BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is generally considered healthy for adults, though ideal ranges vary by individual.
