The tape-measure method

The U.S. Navy formula estimates body fat from your height and the circumference of your neck, waist, and (for women) hips. It requires only a tape measure and is reasonably accurate for most people, though less precise than a DEXA scan.

Measuring well

Measure in centimeters, against bare skin, with the tape snug but not compressing. Measure the neck below the larynx, the waist at the navel, and hips at the widest point. Take each measurement twice and average for consistency.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the Navy method?
It is a good estimate for most people — typically within a few percentage points of lab methods — but individual results vary. Use it to track trends over time.
